Help

This pages contains the Help for the CD-ROM, including instructions for obtaining and installing software.

Getting started

Before you use the CD

The multimedia content of this CDROM requires Apple Quicktime Media Player. If Quicktime has not been installed on your computer, a free copy can be installed from the CD, which is located in the Software folder; simply double-click on the Quicktime Installer and then follow the on-screen instructions.

For best results we recommend that your computer's display resolution should be set to at least 800 x 600 pixels (in Windows, this can be done clicking the right mouse button on the desktop, selecting Properties and then clicking on the Settings tab).

Launching the CD

The CD should launch automatically when you insert the disk. If for some reason this doesn't happen, then you start your Web browser, click on 'File' in the menu and select 'Open.' Proceed to browse the CD-ROM for the file click_me.htm and open that.

Reading and Writing Japanese

Both of the major browsers can now support Japanese without any other programs, though we recommend that you use Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 or later. However, please note that if you are using IE5.5 SP2 or later or IE6 or later, then you also need to ensure that you have the QuickTime ActiveX control, which you can download from http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/qtcheck/.

To enter Japanese text we suggest that you use an Input Method Editor (IME), an application that enables you to enter Japanese characters in other programs by converting keystrokes from an English keyboard into Asian characters. For Windows, use the Microsoft Input Method Editor for Simplified Japanese.

If your computer has Windows 2000 or XP as the operating system, the IME for Simplified Japanese can be installed from the Windows 2000 CDROM (in the Control Panel, select Regional Settings, then Input Locales and add the IME for Japanese, with keyboard layout 'Japanese Input System (MS-IME2000)).

If you use an earlier version of Windows (Windows 95/98 and Windows NT Workstation 4.0), then you will need to obtain the Microsoft Global IME 5.02 for Simplified Japanese with Language Pack. This software can be downloaded free of charge from the Microsoft website (http://www.microsoft.com/msdownload/iebuild/ime5_win32/en/ime5_win32.htm). It can also be obtained on the Microsoft Office Proofing Tools for Asian Languges CDROM and on the Microsoft Office 2000 Multi-Language Pack Disk 4 (Japanese).
